Geoengineering Our Climate Against Global Warming

To make it even simpler, Geoengineering refers to humans maneuvering the Earth’s climate for their advantage or for preventing climate-related calamities.

Fairmont Hotels unveils green IT

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has unveiled its new Green IT plan for its technology infrastructure and information technology (IT) operations.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has unveiled its new Green IT plan for its technology infrastructure and information technology (IT) operations.  The plan is the latest element in the company’s environmental platform, the Fairmont Green Partnership program.

Fairmont’s goal is to limit waste, purchase responsibly, conserve energy and reduce its carbon footprint. The Green IT plan will introduce a workstation power down schedule; electronic waste diversion and aligning donations with recycling companies and charities.

This Green IT environmental initiative is expected to be fully implemented at Fairmont’s properties by the end of 2009.

Says Vineet Gupta, Fairmont's senior vice president, technology:

"Whether it's technology, environmental sustainability, or any other aspect of the hotel environment, Fairmont continues to roll out pioneering programs and services that are reflective of our vision: to be a true leader in the global hospitality industry. With technology still evolving rapidly and e-waste on the rise, this is an area where we can make a tangible impact in addition to lowering our overall CO2 footprint. Furthermore, our industry-leading environmental practices are the benchmark by which many other hotel companies measure against, so we're pleased to expand our green programming into another distinct area of our business."

In March, Fairmont became a member of WWF and pledged to reduce its carbon emissions.   The company has agreed to reduce operational CO2 emissions from its existing portfolio of hotels by 20% below 2006 levels by 2013.

Other Fairmont Green Partnership initiatives include recycling and organic waste diversion; purchasing sustainable seafood; green conferencing solution Eco-Meet; retrofitting energy efficient lighting; creating rooftop herb gardens and redistributing goods and food .
