Geoengineering Our Climate Against Global Warming

The word ‘geoengineering’ is self-descriptive, i.e. it is a process of engineering (through technological and mechanical processes) changes in natural climatic conditions. To make it even simpler, Geoengineering refers to humans maneuvering the Earth’s climate for their advantage or for preventing climate-related calamities.

Wal-mart’s Supply Chain To Become Greener

It is common to hear big brands complain that changing established operational methodologies is unfeasible for making their business practice sustainable. However, Wal-Mart through its chain of Canada stores is about to challenge this very perception. Those who haven’t been reading into Wal-Mart’s sustainability efforts would be pleased to know that this retail giant has been at the forefront of re-inventing itself to adopt more eco-compatible practices.

Making Suppliers Responsible

Wal-mart has introduced a Supply Chain Sustainability Scorecard and scores for some of its American stores have already been publicly released. This will be a part of its environmental program that is aimed at making its suppliers more eco-conscious. Suppliers to Wal-Mart Canada will now be evaluated across four categories:

  • Corporate Environmental Commitment
  • Facilities
  • Equipment
  • Operations

This essentially means that suppliers will be judged on their ability to use greener practices like use of environmentally-supportive alternatives throughout the supply chain including the use of greener facilities for storage or packaging. Wal-Mart’s CEO, Lee Scott, has announced that the next region to take this initiative further will be China. The company has been aggressively expanding in China but now a significant development has taken place wherein the Chinese suppliers have been told that unless they upgrade their supply standards to greener benchmarks, Wal-mart will not hesitate to cut-down upon its business expansion.

Last week, the Wal-mart Sustainability Summit was held in Beijing and officials from the Chinese government and regional NGOs were invited to make everybody understand the company’s seriousness about this issue. Wal-Mart has elaborated that it will not hesitate to increase the frequency of its impromptu audits or use external resources like hired auditors to ensure that contractors are not slipping in their commitment towards better environmental performance.

Can Wal-mart combine sustainability with profitability?

If you are wondering if being so aggressively sustainable would eat into Wal-mart’s profits, forcing it to increase the prices of its merchandise, then you shouldn’t worry. The entire approach is on blending sustainability with profitability. Wal-Mart emphasizes upon using a greener but more efficient supply chain for its 290 Canadian stores. This is done by advocating simple changes in supply practices like choosing rail routes over road transport for longer hauls or the use of plastic crates over cardboard boxes for shipping merchandise. Such simple measures have already helped many Wal-mart stores to reduce supply costs and control procurement-related wastage along with reducing the carbon footprint of the entire supply chain. So, the range of discounts offered by a greener Wal-mart store will only increase as a result of greener procurement, manufacturing and retailing methods. Wal-Mart agrees that contracted suppliers should not outrightly discard local business practices but emphasizes that the idea is to challenge conventional norms that compromise environmental standards.
