Cell Phones: One of the largest causes of e-waste

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, “Recycle cell ¨

phones, it’s an easy call to make.” [1]

The average North American gets a new cell phone every 14 months.

According to the EPA, out of the 140 million cell phones discarded

by Americans in 2008, only about 10 per cent were recycled.

Moreover, their research concluded that if all the cell phones were

recycled, energy to 194,000 homes for one full year would be saved.[2]

Permaculture for a self-sustaining landscape

The use of commercial fertilizers and industrial farming equipment have greatly affected the Earth's environment, and is potentially becoming a global health issue. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Nitrate levels of ten parts per one million parts water isn't a health danger. However, levels above this can be the cause of a fatal disorder known as the "Blue-Baby" syndrome, or methemoglobinemia. This disorder occurs in infants who have ingested water with high nitrate levels. It is also the result of the pregnant mother drinking the contaminated water. It is a blood disorder that is marked by the reduction of oxygen-carrying abilities of the blood.

Nitrates are needed by plants as a source of nitrogen, and are found in manure and commercial fertilizers. When these nitrogen-rich fertilizers are used to treat soil in gardens and on farms the nitrates are washed away by rain, or irrigation and  are drained deeper into the ground. The deeper into the ground it gets, the more it contaminates the ground water source that is ordinarily distributed through communities as tap water. Private and community wells are also susceptible to high nitrate contamination, and disease causing organisms caused by the spike in nitrate levels.

Contrary to popular belief, boiling your drinking water isn't going to completely sterilize it. In fact, if you boil water that is contaminated with high nitrate levels, you may in fact exasperate the problem. Drinking this water can result in sickness and even death. There is no sure-fire way to remove nitrates from your drinking water, so the best option is to only drink water from a reliable source.

Vermicompost-an organic solution

Looking at the big picture, it's easy to see that the solution is to cease the use of commercial and manure-based fertilizers. The use of vermicompost or worm compost is becoming increasingly popular with those who practice permaculture. Vermicompost is nothing more than earthworm castings mixed with ordinary garden compost. It is one hundred percent  organic and doesn't produce high levels of nitrates. The digested soil and compost excreted by the worms provide just as valuable a fertilizer as manure.

Permaculture is essentially the creation of a self-sustaining landscape or region that doesn't require much human aide after it's establishment. It literally comes from the words "permanent agriculture", and is an ideal that strives for long term sustainability in communities.  Those who practice permaculture follow a set of ethics that bind them to care for the Earth and for their fellow people. It is also ethically expected that communities that practice permaculture donate their excess crops and assistance to those in need. Doing so is a means of spreading the practice of self sustaining agriculture.

Permacultural ideals have spread worldwide

As more communities around the world are practicing the ethics of permaculture, the use of industrial farm equipment is slowly dwindling. Though not much, it is still reducing the amount of pollutants that are released into the Earth's atmosphere. Knowing that there is a reduction in harmful environmental factors associated with permaculture is inspiring to many people who are passionate about our environment. Organizations like The Permaculture Research Institute of Australia have reached out to several regions around the world in hopes of introducing a means to give back to the earth and aid in world hunger. It's sister facility is located in New Mexico and it offers a variety of courses and programs to get individuals and communities started on this environmentally conscious path.

Permacultural ideals have spread worldwide and have caught the attention of powerful people. The First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama, is even on the permaculture bandwagon by announcing her plans to plant an organic garden on the grounds of the White House. She is hoping to turn it into an educational tool for children, on what is important to eat and put in your bodies. She is also hoping to spread environmental awareness in growing your own organic food.

Converting to permaculture reducing the use of industrial techniques and commercial fertilizers, will greatly lower the levels of nitrate that gets released into the drinking water. It will also eliminate many of the harmful chemicals that are released into our atmosphere. The Permaculture Institutes of Australia and New Mexico are aware of this and are feverishly spreading the word.
