Geoengineering Our Climate Against Global Warming

The word ‘geoengineering’ is self-descriptive, i.e. it is a process of engineering (through technological and mechanical processes) changes in natural climatic conditions. To make it even simpler, Geoengineering refers to humans maneuvering the Earth’s climate for their advantage or for preventing climate-related calamities.

Reducing carbon paw prints for pets

GreenPet

Green living is not just limited to humans. Nowadays, domesticated pets like cats, dogs, birds, fishes, reptiles, and horses are also being taken closer to nature and joining the green and organic bandwagon.

All over the world humans can be seen using organic foods, shampoos, soaps, recycled paper, etc. Adding to this is the new line of organic products for pets that contain green litter boxes, shampoos, conditioners, soaps, flea repellents, perfumes, oils, etc.

The 73 millions dogs in America produce almost 10 million tons of dog poop annually. In a research, the US Environmental Protection Agency concluded that droppings from two or three dogs over a 100-day period would result in creating enough bacteria to make a bay and its 40 kilometres surroundings unsafe from swimming.[1]

If pet owners realise how large a single pet’s carbon paw prints are and how they can be reduced by taking simple steps and making slight alterations to the lifestyle, they are sure to catch on. This article puts together a list of tips that would help reduce the pet’s carbon paw prints.

  • Adoption: Adopt a pet instead of buying one. Many pet breeders makes large profits by breeding pure breed pets. Many a times they overbreed or inbreed pets and make them live a lousy lifestyle with poor vetinary and dietary care. Thus, it is a good idea to adopt one of the 70,000 puppies and kittens that are born everyday. Also, promote the eradication of pet breeding completely to ensure healthy and happy newborns.
  • Neuter: With the rising number of puppies and kittens, the number of homeless pets is rising. Thus, it is a good idea to neuter pets. Moreover, neutering pets would lead to healthier lives by eliminating the incidence of prostate illness. This is a low risk procedure and most vets are trained to carry out the surgery.
  • Leash the Pet: It is advisable to keep the dog on a leash when outdoors. This is because pets can be damaging to the natural habitat. Cats are the biggest bird killers that have resulted in high bird mortality rates. Moreover, they can be destructive to plants and trees.
  • Junk Food vs. Organic Food: Replace junk food with organic food. This is because many pet food brands that are found in supermarkets and grocery shops contain reconstituted animal by products like wastes from the poultry and beef industries. Moreover, most of the animals that are used to make pet food are classified as 4-D (that is, dead, dying, diseased, or disabled) at the slaughterhouse. Nor to these foods contain any proteins sources. Check labels and make sure the food that you serve to your pet is FDA certified. Natural and organic food contains animal meat that is produced in a sustainable and humane way without the usage of any drugs or chemical procession. Infact, these foods contain natural substances and are rich in their Vitamin C and Vitamin E content.
  • Local Products: By feeding pets locally produced goods, pet owners would be saving on fuel that is used to deliver to stores.
  • Dry vs. Wet Foods: Feed pets more of dry foods than wet foods as dry foods require less packaging than canned food. Moreover, food leftovers can be reused.
  • Poop: Scoop out the pet poop in a biodegradable bag instead of using a plastic bag. A San Francisco study concluded that pet waste makes up 3.7 per cent of residential landfills that are thrown away in plastic bags that would take more than 100 years to biodegrade. Cat owners should not use clumping clay litterbags, as they are bad for the environment and the clay sediment is infused with carcinogenic silica dust that can coat the cat lungs. Moreover, the sodium bentonite in the clumping clay litterbag can poison the cat through ingestion by swelling upto 15 times their dry size. Many eco-friendly cat litters are available in the market today to solve these problems. Accumulated pet poop is hazardous to health and effects the environment when it is carried into the waterways.
  • Sustainable Goods: The list of sustainable goods or good made from recycled materials in never ending. Give your pet toys, collars, leashes, pet beds, etc. that are made with sustainable fibres. Use stainless steel and ceramic bowls for food and water, to reduce the risk of exposing the pet to harmful chemicals.
  • Use Organic Cleaning Products: Stop the usage of toxic chemically formulated shampoos, conditioners, soaps, oils, gels, flea control, and other grooming products. Instead, use natural, organic, herbal, and homemade products. Do not use products that contain sulphate, phosphate, and other chemicals that are harmful to the environment.
  • Surface Cleaners: Instead of using chemically formulated and harsh cleaning products to clean the mess that is made by your pet, use gentle and soft cleaners that are plant based. Tea tree oils are very widely used in such products.
  • Not Fads: Pets are definitely not fads or fashion accessories. Thus, make sure you understand that pets require a lot of money, time, and effort. Do not rush out on your decision and impulsively decide to bring a pet home.
  • Ice Melter: Use a child and pet-safe de-icer such as Safe Paw’s friendly ice melter as ingestion of salt-based ice melters can cause health problems and can contaminate drinking supplies. These chemicals can stick to the pets paws and burn and lick the paws.
  • Electronic Chips: It is a good idea to insert an electronic chip in your pet’s body. This is because when your pet goes missing, the fuel cost, paper cost, poster cost, and phone bill cost add to the carbon print.
  • Green Vetinary Hospitals: Consider using vetinary hospitals that indulge in green practices. Small, space efficient, green architecture and other practices have been initiated by many hospitals.

Apart from just homemade pet food, pet owners can make many homemade grooming products like:

  • Shampoo: Mix 2.5 tablespoons of hand washing liquid, half cup of vinegar, half cup of baking soda and some fragrance to make shampoo for your pet.
  • Conditioner: Mix half-tablespoon baby oil, yolk of half an egg and 1-tablespoon of water to make a conditioner for your pet.
  • Eye Wash: If the eyes of your pet need to be cleaned use a medicine dropper and distilled water and drop the water in the dog’s eyes. This is a quick and easy wash.
  • Ear Wash: If the ears of your pet stink, mix vinegar and water in equal quantities and store in a squeeze bottle. Rub a small amount of the mixture in your pet’s ears everyday.
  • Perfume: Mix ¼ cup of purified water, 4 tablespoons essential oils, and 1-tablespoon karo syrup. Store the mixture in a bottle and use when needed.
  • Flea Deterrent: There is absolutely no need to depend on toxic chemicals to control fleas. Instead, use home remedies like rubbing the pet with basil, mint, tansy, fennel, or any strong smelling herb. Also grow such herbs around the kennel. Another way of getting rid from fleas are by adding salt to the bath water or adding brewers yeast to the food. Alternatively, make a mixture of lemon peel and water and let it stay overnight. In the morning, sponge the tea on the coat of the pet.

Being a green pet owner is not about depriving the pet from things and foods it likes but is about making smart and intelligent decisions that would positively influence it and the environment’s life. The pet may never really realise that the changes have been made, but making small changes would ensure that the environment would love it.
