Cell Phones: One of the largest causes of e-waste

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, “Recycle cell ¨

phones, it’s an easy call to make.” [1]

The average North American gets a new cell phone every 14 months.

According to the EPA, out of the 140 million cell phones discarded

by Americans in 2008, only about 10 per cent were recycled.

Moreover, their research concluded that if all the cell phones were

recycled, energy to 194,000 homes for one full year would be saved.[2]

The world’s Greenest Notebooks

The world’s greenest notebooks have been designed with keeping the environment in mind. These notebooks use recyclable materials and are highly recyclable themselves. Moreover, these notebooks use less energy.

The features of these notebooks are:

  •  Elimination of many harmful toxins

Green notebooks are designed in a way that helps eliminate many harmful toxins that are incurred during the manufacturing of the notebook. These toxins include brominated flame-retardants (BFRs), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that can be found in internal cables, circuit boards, insulators, adhesives, and connectors.

  •  Less packaging

Many notebook manufacturers are now concentrating on their packaging to sell their product as green. Smaller boxes made from recycled paper are being used nowadays. Smaller packaging also means fitting more boxes on each shipping pallet, meaning less consumption of fuel and few CO2 emissions. This may seems like a small effort, but every small effort counts.

  • Energy efficiency

Many manufacturers are now resorting to making both the hardware and software, which is designed to work together. This allows notebooks to become smarter and consume less energy. Thus, by working together, many adjustments are made between the two, making them more energy efficient and resulting in fewer CO2 emissions.

Read below to know more about the worlds five greenest notebooks. These notebooks surely help save electricity and money and help protect the planet. In the United States of America, the government has provided EPEAT, which is a simple tool to help decide if a notebook is green or not. EPEAT stands for Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool.

This association helps evaluate the environmental impact of a particular product based on the chances of it being recycled, how much energy is consumed, its design, etc. The tool has twenty-three essential environmental criteria for desktops, and notebooks that must be met for the product to be EPEAT rated. Further, there is an option for Silver or Gold marking. The notebooks that are mentioned in the article are classified as EPEAT Gold along with Energy Star 5.0 certification.
