Solar energy panels for your home

 Energy received from the sun every hour is sufficient to satisfy the energy needs of the whole civilization for one full year. According to NASA[1], the sun irradiates the earth everyday with 174 Petawatts of solar energy. A part of the energy is reflected back into space and another part is absorbed by the atmosphere. If the earth only receives 20 per cent of the energy, i.e., 34.8 Petawatts per day, it would still be much more than a day's need. According to statistics, daily energy requirements for the world are roughly 45 Gigawatts.[2]

For many years, people have been taking advantage of the light received from the sun for many different purposes. However, this phenomenon can now be brought home at a reasonable price. The latest trend of walking on the road of sustainability has led to many suburbanites remodel their homes by installing ecologically friendly alternatives to energy resources. The article discusses the commonly used home solar panels, its use, its advantages, and other information. 

With so many different ways to generate energy, it can get confusing which one to choose. However, if you are worried about the possible consequences of using up fossil fuels, or the damaging consequences of fossil fuels emissions, then investing in a solar panel for your house is advisable. These panels are set on the roof of the house or building. Some solar panels can also stand independently around the house. The benefits of using solar energy panels to generate energy are endless.

Getting solar energy panels for the home is not as expensive as what it used to be some years ago. Almost all equipment that we use in our daily lives can now be powered with the help of solar energy. The biggest benefit of using this type of renewable energy is elimination of depletion of fossil fuel usage to reduce pollution. The next important advantage of using this is cost of the energy bill that is free or reduced as solar energy is free, unlimited, and renewable.


How do solar energy panels work?

When setting up a solar energy panel, it is important to determine where the panel needs to be placed. The panel must be set at a place where it will receive sun light all throughout the day. If the area receives only partial sunlight, the solar panel may be put on swivel for rotation. The solar panel needs to be exposed to direct sunlight to generate maximum amount of energy in the house.

Solar energy panels collect energy from sunlight and convert it into direct current electricity. Two pieces of silicon that are oppositely charged are sited together under a glass piece and as protons of the sunbeams tap the negatively charged neutrons away from the silicon, the electric field formed by the two pieces of silicon act like a magnet to the neutron. Tiny pieces of wires catch the neutrons, which when connected create direct current electricity. The wires are connected to an inverter on the other side that transforms the direct current into alternating current, which can be used in homes.


Types of Solar Energy Panels

The two types of conventional solar energy panels that are commonly found are photovoltaic modules and solar thermal collectors.

Photovoltaic modules are most commonly seen at homes. These panels are made using many solar cells. The solar cells are fastened together to transfer the sun's energy into electricity. As compared to this, solar thermal collectors collect heat from the sun to generate electricity.

Both options work great at home. The solar thermal collectors are less costly and can generate electricity to a large area. These panels depend on the heat of the sun and do not do great in locations where there is a lot of diffused light. Thus, these work great in large homes where there is large open land or roof space to place the equipment. The photovoltaic panels can be installed in homes where there is less direct sunlight as well. Unfortunately, photovoltaic panels do not have a huge collection rate as compared to solar thermal collectors. These panels work great for small houses where direct sunlight is not received.

Whichever solar energy panel you decide to put in your home, the best thing about the equipment is that it is expandable. It is possible to start with a few panels. After monitoring their performance, it is possible to add to more panels if you need them.
